April 24th. 2009.
The day dawned very grey, and exceedingly wet! We were due to meet at Mrs. Mulcahey's store, Midleton Fruit and Veg., to start rejuvenating two sorely neglected areas that should be flower beds. An e.mail from Natasha Harty dispelled any doubts that we were going ahead despite the weather and thus it was that at 11 am four of us met at the shop, armed with tools and waterproofs ready to face the task ahead. Natasha Harty, Louise Baker, Tony Riley and Vikki Dennell ( who was unwell and was designated to take photographs) set about the job in hand. Interestingly, Natasha is Irish, Louise is a Scot and Tony and Vikki are from England- perhaps there is a joke here??
The first, and smallest, bed was cleared of a large amount of rubbish and digging started. We had set two hours for the job but it soon became obvious that it would take alot longer! the indefatiguable Natasha was optimistic that we could do the first bed and start planting but the weather had turned the earth into a quagmire and work was hard and slow.
By 1pm. we had dug about three-quarters of the first area, and removed a barrowload of weeds. To celebrate a globe artichoke was planted in the centre of the plot.
People passing were very interested in the project and encouraging in their comments, especially as this is a volunteer project aimed at improving the whole area and turning it into an enjoyable space for everyone.
