A Better Day...

Friday, 1st. May 2009.

The gardening Gods smiled upon us- the sun was shining as we gathered again in order to get the first bed ready for planting. The team was again Natasha, Louise, Vikki and Tony, with assistance later from Louise's son, Reuben.

The bed was just as we had left it the previous Friday, with the lone Globe Artichoke standing like our standard in the middle of the battleground.

We were soon getting dug in, literally. The ground was far drier than before and much more workable so after about one and a half hours ( and two barrow loads of weeds) we had finished digging and the plot began to take shape. The soil appears to be of excellent quality and contains an amazing number of worms, none of which were converted to fishing bait!

Such was the determination to get the bed straight that, instead of finishing at 1 pm. as planned, we stayed on until 2.15 to plant up with what we had available. The plan is to put a slab path from one corner running around the centre. Louise did a stamp out on the earth to mark the approximate position of the path, and we promptly had a shower for thirty seconds. ( Louise- please don't go round five times!)

By the time we had finished the area was planted with Strawberries, Mint, Feverfew, Marigolds and Nasturtiums. Rocket seeds have also been sown.

As the work progresses it is generating more interest from passers-by and the project is proving to be a good public relations exercise as well as improving the general tidiness of the area. one lady even donated some seed potatoes- they will no doubt find a home somewhere!!

More planting will follow in future weeks and work will start on the second bed- hopefully with more volunteers!!!!

PS: Tasha's sultana soda bread is to die for!! Worth volunteering just to get a taste !!!
